Post script

The Palm Beach County Library Association (PBCLA) has a nifty new website, which can be found at http://pbcla.info. Thanks to Carol Bean (NCR) for her help in getting it set up!

Fin

Whew! I've managed to finish the 23 things with a whole 45 minutes to spare (to be eligible for the mp3 player drawing, that is!) Yay.

This 23 things project has been a lot of fun. In addition to getting to "play" at work, it was interesting discussing various web 2.0 topics with co-workers, and learning about several web 2.0 applications that were new to me. I especially enjoyed the web 2.0 awards list, and I'll be spending more time visitng the links offered there.

Thanks, PBCLS, I couldn't have done it without you.

why doesn't overdrive love my ipod?

Overdrive was great while I was using a creative zen micro mp3 player. But after upgrading to an ipod nano, alas, I had to return to checking out books on CD from my local library.

Overdrive has a nice selection of audiobooks, but please, Overdrive, can't you make friends with Apple?

Podcasting and cleaning

Ok, seriously, if it weren't for podcasts, my house would never get cleaned. All it takes is a quick trip over to NPR's podcast page, and after downloading the latest This American Life, Voila!! My floors are mopped, laundry is done, and the yard is mowed! It's like magic. Thank you, NPR.

Zillow blues

Zillow is a terrific web 2.0 tool. You can use it to find out what comparable houses in your town are worth, or to find out what houses are for sale. But Zillow was a lot more fun when housing costs were rising, rather than falling!!!

Library book letter

Recently, a letter written on ruled notebook paper was found inside a children's library book.

To summarize, it said:

Dear library,

Thank you so much for letting me borrow this really awesome book.  Sadly, I now have to return it.

PBCLS wiki

The PBCLS wiki is a fun idea! I enjoyed reading about everyone's favorites. Now I have even more vacation ideas, books to add to my reading list, and new restaurants to try out.

Wiki wiki wooo

Wikis are great. I particularly enjoyed the Library Success wiki. It's nothing short of revolutionary that there is a venue like this where library workers/managers/fans/younameit from anywhere in the world can collaborate and share stories and other useful information!

What I did for my summer vacation

Oh, oops, wrong title. What I meant was "Why Web 2.0 is important to me". :)

Lots has been written about the benefits of web 2.0, so I'll point to a couple of other peoples' commentaries here.

Web 2.0 has been useful in emergencies, specifically VA Tech shootings and CA wildfires.

It allows us to travel without carrying laptops and other equipment, since most of our data can be stored online.

And finally, here's a good piece concerning the overall significance of Web 2.0. I especially like the author's comment that Web 2.0 is a horrible name for Web 2.0!

Technorati-ing Technorati

I did an experiment to see if Technorati could help me find blog posts about Technorati, and I'd have to say the experiment failed. Since so many blogs have links at the end of each post to "digg this" or "technorati" tag that, the search results in a gazillion hits for the word Technorati (1,102,671 to be exact). It's a challenge to find blog posts that actually discuss Technorati.

Since no one will be able to locate my Technorati blog post, I'll end here.

social boo.kmar.ks

Del.icio.us is a nice tool. I've been using it for a while as a way to access my bookmarks no matter where I am. But until this week I hadn't taken advantage of its social features. It's nice to know that should I ever run out of things to look at on the interwebs, I can use del.icio.us to find more.

Can I get a napkin please? (Food Court Musical)

Youtube is a fantastic way to share short videos with family and friends.

I laugh harder every time I watch this.

Devi's last day :(

Devi's last day doubled as International Day at NCR.

Snoozefeeders

Okay, I suppose that newsreaders are quite practical, but looking at blogpost after blogpost all in the same format makes me nod off.

It's like reading from an ebook, or reading journal articles in a database. When you don't go to the original source, you miss out on the content creator's original design. I like seeing what fonts and type of paper an author or publisher has chosen for a book, I like seeing the layout of a journal or magazine, ads and all, and I also like visiting the actual blog site. Visiting the sites themselves give me a feel about their writers, and makes for a more personal, first-hand experience.

Brick Tamland: I love... desk.

Ron Burgundy: Brick, are you just looking at things in the office and saying that you love them?

Brick Tamland: I love lamp.

Ron Burgundy: Do you really love the lamp, or are you just saying it because you saw it?

Brick Tamland: I love lamp. I love lamp.

Obligatory cat post

Days before Hurricane Wilma, a pregnant kitty showed up and demanded food. I complied. After the storm passed, I nervously awaited her return; when she did I promptly made a home for her and her soon-to-be furballs. There were 6 little ones altogether: Star, Snowball, Ruby, Penny, Beau and Molly. Molly didn't quite make it into the picture frame here, but she was the biggest and the fluffiest of them all.

Bl0gging in libr4ri3s

Blogger Greg Schwartz has a nice post about what blogs are, what you can do with them, and why they might be useful to librarians / libraries. Check it out here.

There are plenty of fun blogs written by librarians that are not sponsored by any particular library. Here are a couple of the more interesting ones:

Most of the advice in this video is common sense, but there's nothing wrong with a little reminder from time to time.
